Kitesurfing in Austria: the Traunsee

by Kristina

At a glance

  • Niederwind – thermal wind with constant good weather between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Oberwind – before or after a cold front between 5-9 o’clock
  • May- October (in summer the thermal winds tend to be less)
  • not a beginner’s spot, keeping altitude is a must know
  • Location: Rindbach on the south bank of the Traunsee near Ebensee, reachable from Salzburg in a good 1.5 hours

In the heart of the Salzkammergut lies the Traunsee, embedded in a breathtaking backdrop. The Traunsee is not only visually very attractive, the water ist that clear that it has also drinking quality.

The surfing beach is right next to Ebensee on a well-tended meadow. The Rindbach leisure center offers everything you wish for: places for sunbathing, sanitary facilities, a children’s playground, beach volleyball and soccer field, a barbecue area and boat rental. Apart from the parking fee, the use is free of charge.
The so called “wind bar” takes care of the physical well-being and provides food and drinks in the summer months. There is also a parking space for mobile homes and Campers directly at the spot.

Apart from the little complicated wind conditions, the Traunsee offers pretty much everything that makes it a great destination for kiting also for families. There are, however, a few ticks: It can get really crowded here, especially in the summer months. Not only at the bathing area, also the start & landing area is often crowded. The second disadvantage is the water temperature, because the Traunsee is pretty cold and hardly exceeds the 20°C mark even in summer.

In the surroundings:
Within 15 minutes you can reach the Gmunden beach, which has a playground, water slide, children’s pool, direct and gently sloping lake access and a kiosk.
Also about 15 minutes from there you’ll find the romantic natural spectacle of the Langbathseen. Here, away from the hustle and bustle, you can really soak up nature, swim or take a hike around the two lakes. The paths through the nature reserve at the foot of the Höllengebirge are suitable for strollers.
